Auf dem Modellbetrieb für Ökolandbau in Müncheberg wurden von 1993 bis 2013 Feldversuche zur Ermittlung der Ertragsstabilität von zwei Körnerleguminosen (Schmalblättrige Lupine und Futtererbse), Wintergetreide (Roggen und Weizen), Hafer und Silomais durchgeführt. Zwei orthogonale Datensätze wurden genutzt um die temporären Ertragsschwankungen der Einzelkulturen zu vergleichen. Beide Körnerleguminosen zeigten die geringste Ertragsstabilität von allen untersuchten Kulturen. Dies war sowohl für varianzbasierte als auch für regressionsbasierte Stabilitätsparameter der Fall. Gründe für die geringe Ertragsstabilität sind unzureichend bekannt. Es müssen Strategien für das Management entwickelt werden, um mit den großen Schwankungen umzugehen. |

An Organic Research Centre project is examining how diversity-based tools can assist in the on-farm improvement of organic wheat. Successful organic crop production requires varieties that are resistant to diseases, competitive against weeds, and effective at scavenging nutrients. Yet conventional plant breeding has largely neglected organic systems by breeding varieties exclusively for high input conditions. As a consequence, organic producers currently do not have enough choice of plant varieties for organic conditions. One way to expand the choice is to create plant diversity anew and subject it to natural selection on organic farms. In Praxisversuchen wurde über drei Jahre der Einfluss von Strohmulch auf das Auftreten von PVY (Potato virus Y), den Befall mit dem Kartoffelkäfer (Leptinotarsa decemlineata) und den Knollenertrag in ökologisch angebauten Kartoffeln untersucht. Strohmulch führte in drei von 17 Experimenten zu einer signifikanten Reduktion von PVY, und in weiteren sieben Versuchen gab es einen nicht-signifikanten Trend zur erminderung von PVY. Der Effekt von Strohmulch auf PVY scheint vom allgemeinen Infektionsniveau abzuhängen, welches je nach Jahr, Standort und Sorte unterschiedlich war. Agroforestry is a land-use system that integrates trees and shrubs with crops and/or livestock production. It has been identified by the International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD, 2008) as a ‘win-win’ approach that balances the production of commodities (food, feed, fuel, fibre, etc.) with non-commodity outputs such as environmental protection and cultural and landscape amenities. This paper will review the potential of agroforestry as part of a multifunctional working landscape in temperate regions, and will consider management and policy implications of widespread adoption of this form of land-use. |

As part of the TILMAN-ORG CORE ORGANIC II project, data on the use of reduced tillage in organic farming systems from a range of field trials and the published literature was compiled. The application of straw mulch to organic seed potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) has been shown to reduce virus incidence. In order to determine the associated agronomic effects of straw mulch, applied at 2.5–5 t ha�1, on soil nitrate dynamics, weed development, tuber yield and soil erosion, 12 field experiments were evaluated. Experiments were conducted on organic farms over 3 years at two locations in a temperate climate (635–709 mm precipitation/year; 8.1 8C mean air temperature) on loamy silt soils. Despite the importance of yield stability in organic agriculture, little quantitative information is currently available on the factors limiting stability or on optimal approaches for improving it. Research so far indicates that organic systems are not always more stable than conventional systems; which system is more stable is likely to depend on the spatial and temporal scale of stability and on the measure of stability used. We show that opportunities for quantifying yield stability in organic farming lie in the targeted coordination of existing data networks within the organic community in order to increase yield stability on farms and beyond. |

As costs for mineral fertilizers rise, legume-based leys are recognised as a potential alternative nitrogen source for crops. Here we demonstrate that including species-rich legume-based leys in the rotation helps to maximize synergies between agricultural productivity and other ecosystem services. By using functionally diverse plant species mixtures these services can be optimised and fine-tuned to regional and farm-specific needs. Legume-based leys offer multiple benefits to ecosystem service provision, e.g. protecting soil and supporting pollinators. While weeds can play an antagonistic role during ley establishment, little is known about weed communities in these leys or about the optimal solutions for weed control in the establishment phase. The ability of different legume cover crops to suppress annual weeds during the early establishment phase was compared using a simulation model of inter-plant competition and field observations. Height, partitioning parameters, extinction coefficients, crop density and time of emergence were recorded for 11 species sown in monocultures.
